Automatic Drip Coffee Ratio and Recipe for Better Coffee
Written by Daniel Molinares, founder and roaster at Molex Coffee
A good automatic coffee maker can brew excellent coffee when the inputs are right. For a dependable small batch, start with 33 grams of coffee and 600 grams of water.

This recipe follows the 55 g-per-liter starting point published by Moccamaster and used in SCA home-brewer testing. The SCA requires certified brewers to contact the coffee with 197.6–204.8°F / 92–96°C water and, at full capacity, brew for more than four but less than eight minutes. Your machine controls much of that automatically.
What matters most in an automatic coffee maker
Correct dose: weigh the coffee instead of counting scoops.
Even, medium grind: a burr grinder creates fewer powdery fines and oversized pieces.
Good water: filtered water improves flavor and helps manage scale.
Clean equipment: stale coffee oil in the basket and carafe can overpower fresh beans.
A capable brewer: models such as Moccamaster, Behmor Brazen, and Breville Precision Brewer are designed to control temperature and water delivery more carefully than basic machines.
How to brew better automatic drip coffee
Start clean. Rinse the basket and carafe. Confirm the spray head is clear and the machine is descaled according to its manual.
Add 600 g of fresh, cold water. Use the scale or an accurate vessel; machine “cups” are not standard 8-ounce cups.
Prepare the filter. Seat the correct paper or permanent filter flat. If using paper, rinse it when practical and discard the water.
Grind 33 g of coffee medium. Level the bed so the first water does not favor one side.
Select the right program. On a Breville, Gold mode is the straightforward baseline. On a Behmor, begin at 200°F with a 30–45 second pre-soak. On a Moccamaster, use the normal full-flow setting for an appropriate batch size.
Brew and observe. Make sure the basket drains normally and the machine completes its cycle. Do not open or stir unless the manufacturer permits it.
Swirl the carafe and serve. Mixing evens out the stronger early liquid and weaker late liquid. Move coffee from a hot plate to a thermal carafe if it will sit.
Machine-specific starting settings
Brewer
Beginner setting
Useful note
Behmor Brazen Plus
200°F, 30–45 sec pre-soak
Behmor calls 200°F a versatile set-and-leave temperature
Breville Precision Brewer
Gold mode
The program automatically targets SCA-style temperature and timing
Moccamaster
Normal brew; 55 g/L
Use the half-pot selector only for smaller batches on models that include it
Other quality drip brewer
Medium grind; 55 g/L
If temperature is adjustable, begin at 200°F
Automatic drip troubleshooting
Problem
Change first
Weak but otherwise pleasant
Use 35–36 g coffee for 600 g water
Sour, thin, or brew runs unusually fast
Grind finer
Bitter, dry, or basket drains slowly
Grind coarser
Some grounds remain dry
Level the bed; clean and inspect the spray head
Stale or rancid flavor
Deep-clean the basket and carafe; use fresher coffee
Chalky flavor or noisy, slow heating
Check water hardness and descale according to the manual
