The easiest water choices for home brewing
1. Filtered tap water
This is the best first step for most people. An activated-carbon refrigerator, faucet, or pitcher filter can reduce chlorine and odors. It may not significantly reduce hardness, so check your kettle or coffee machine for scale and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.
2. Bottled spring water
Spring water can work well when tap water tastes unpleasant, but brands and sources vary widely. Choose water that tastes neutral and does not leave a heavy mineral finish. “More minerals” does not automatically mean better coffee.
3. Remineralized reverse-osmosis water
Reverse osmosis removes most dissolved material. For coffee, the water should then be blended with mineral-rich water or remineralized with a formula designed for brewing. Straight RO or distilled water often produces a cup that is difficult to balance and may not be appropriate for some machines.

A TDS meter does not tell the whole story
A handheld TDS meter estimates the total amount of dissolved material, but it cannot tell you whether that material is calcium, magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate, or something else. Two waters can display the same number and brew very different cups. Use TDS as a screening measurement, then consider hardness and alkalinity—or simply compare the taste in a controlled side-by-side brew.
How to test whether your water is holding your coffee back
- Taste the water at room temperature. If it smells like chlorine or tastes metallic, salty, chalky, or stale, it will not improve after brewing.
- Brew the same coffee twice. Keep the coffee dose, coffee-to-water ratio, grind, temperature, and time identical. Change only the water.
- Taste the cups after they cool slightly. Compare sweetness, clarity, acidity, bitterness, and finish.
- Inspect your equipment. Fast scale buildup is evidence that your water treatment should also protect the brewer—not only improve flavor.
